Collection Bestiaire and A Sense of Time – Jessica Beauchemin

Excessive research forms an integral part of my creative work. In the Fall of 2011, a research project gave me the chance to realize a goal. I learned to work with three traditional materials of animal origin: the stingray, feathers, and mother of pearl.

This project allowed me to master and integrate these materials into my creations. In the end, I created the triptych Bestiary, a collection of three sculptural hair ornaments: Bestiary I – Dasyatis Sephen; Bestiary II – Alcedo Atthis; and Bestiary III – Pinctada.

I became aware of time’s importance in my artistic process.

In an era where efficiency and profitability define its value, my creative work eulogizes an older calculation of time, when its purpose focused on applying thorough accuracy to minute details. In addition, a piece of me requires time to apply precision, feel more respect for my materials, and be in harmony with my art. Like artists and craftsmen of the past, I would value the power to control time, as I need to experience it.

I want to continue on this path, taking time to explore new materials in combination with wood. I also want to develop the sculptural aspect of my pieces and create works, which are so independent, we forget their function.
